Frequently Asked Questions
Eighteen questions people genuinely ask, answered plainly. Several of these answers are simply “no”, and those are the most important ones on this page.
About hypnotherapy
It involves guided conversation, relaxation and focused attention, directed towards goals the individual has chosen. A person remains aware throughout, takes part willingly, and can ask questions, pause or stop at any point. In practice, ordinary conversation usually takes up more of a session than people expect.
No. Nobody can be made to do or say anything against their own values or wishes. A person remains themselves throughout, retains control, and participates voluntarily. The idea of hypnosis as control over another person comes from entertainment and fiction rather than from practice.
No. It is not sleep and it is not unconsciousness. It is closer to a state of settled, focused attention, similar to becoming absorbed in a book or a task. People remain aware of what is happening around them and able to respond.
Where a session is appropriate, it may include conversation, relaxation, focused attention, guided imagery and goal-oriented techniques, followed by time to reflect on how the experience felt. You decide what you wish to discuss, and there is no requirement to disclose anything you would rather keep private. Our What to Expect page describes the process step by step.
It may be explored as a complementary approach for relaxation and coping with everyday stress, where that is appropriate for the individual. Some people find relaxation-based approaches helpful and others do not, so individual experiences vary. Where stress or emotional difficulty is significant or persistent, support from a qualified healthcare or mental health professional is the appropriate route.
It may be explored in relation to motivation and everyday routines that a person has chosen for themselves, where appropriate. This never extends to decisions about food, activity, monitoring or medication, which belong with an appropriately qualified healthcare professional. No result is implied or guaranteed.
Limits and medical care
No. Hypnotherapy does not cure diabetes and it does not reverse diabetes. Diabetes is a medical condition that requires care from an appropriately qualified healthcare professional. Anyone claiming that hypnotherapy can cure it is not describing responsible practice.
No. Hypnosis cannot replace insulin, and it must never be treated as a reason to reduce or stop it. Where insulin has been prescribed, that decision belongs entirely to the healthcare professional responsible for your care.
No. Hypnotherapy does not replace prescribed medication of any kind. It is a complementary approach that sits alongside medical care, and it changes nothing about what has been prescribed for you.
No. Hypnotherapy must not be presented as a way to independently lower or control blood glucose levels, and it is not presented that way here. Blood glucose monitoring and any decisions arising from it remain entirely with your healthcare professional.
Yes. Your medical care, your monitoring routine and your prescribed medication all continue exactly as your healthcare professional has advised. Nothing on this website or in any session is a reason to change, pause or stop any part of it.
Not on the basis of hypnotherapy, and not on the basis of anything on this website. Do not start, stop, reduce or change prescribed medication or insulin unless an appropriately qualified healthcare professional has told you to. This holds true even if you feel calmer or better than you have in some time, because how a person feels is not a substitute for medical assessment.
Anything clinical: your diagnosis, your readings, your medication, your monitoring routine, your symptoms and any changes you have noticed. It is also sensible to mention that you are considering a complementary approach, so that the person responsible for your care is fully informed.
Suitability and sessions
No. It is not appropriate for everyone, and it is not appropriate for every goal. Suitability depends on individual circumstances, goals, existing medical care, emotional wellbeing and personal willingness, and it is considered case by case. Being told that this is not the right approach for you is a legitimate outcome of a first conversation.
There is no fixed number, and none is promised. It depends entirely on the individual, their goals and what they find useful. Anyone stating a set number in advance would be making a commercial claim rather than an honest one.
No. Individual experiences vary considerably, and no outcome is guaranteed, implied or described as permanent. Some people find relaxation-based approaches helpful, others find they do very little for them, and both are ordinary outcomes.

Why the answers are worded carefully
Careful wording is not evasion
Phrases such as “may support”, “where appropriate” and “individual experiences vary” appear throughout this website. They are used because they are accurate, not because they are cautious.
Health claims stated with more confidence than the evidence allows can lead people to make decisions that cause real harm, particularly where medication is involved. Where something cannot honestly be promised, this website says so.

Some questions are better answered in a conversation
Particularly the ones that begin “in my situation, would this even be appropriate?”
